Answer the following questions in no less than 300 words but no greater than 1000 words put together...
Character's background (their past and present): Tony on Marvel movie wiki
Character's personality: Tony Stark: "Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist." (Avengers movie)

This is an accurate summary of Tony Stark on the surface. Tony Stark, even without the Iron Man armor, has layers--and it's interesting that even his own description only hints at that surface. Underneath, none of this is a lie, but it's often a dodge from the troubled, self-hating, and conflicted man he mostly refuses to admit he is. Tony thinks in the future-tense--what's past is past, and he can try to make up for it but he's not going to dwell. This does not mean, however, he can entirely leave off the self-destructive behavior that comes out when his doubts become too plentiful.

To the world, Tony Stark has presented many things. In the public eye practically from birth due to his parents' status, he did nothing to discourage this attention by manifesting early genius, being a spoiled rich kid, becoming an orphan, and continuing antics both scientific and personal that made him front page news. He's grown up in the spotlight, and the picture hasn't always been favorable. And he likes the attention. Denied his father's approval and affection, Tony has found a substitute in the attention, either positive or negative, of the masses. He's always done what he wants, with little thought to the consequences or the feelings of others, because he's always been the smartest guy in the room and it's made him arrogant and a little bit lonely.

He'd never admit this, of course. Tony would tell you he's happy and well-adjusted, because he doesn't want you to believe anything else. Tony puts out an aura of confidence and swagger, even when he's out of control. He does things decisively, and doesn't brood on past failures. Introspection does not come naturally to him. For this reason, he can be both very self-aware and very not at the same time, depending on the subject. Superficially, he's always thinking, always calculating. But it may take him longer to work out what he's really feeling or wants.

Over the course of the films, Tony has grown a lot. When he starts out, he's an overgrown man-child, irresponsible, relying on his personal assistant to make sure he's where he needs to be and sometimes failing even with that. He drinks, he has sex fairly indiscriminately, and lives the high life in between tinkering with inventions of both personal and company-wide import. One thing Tony is not is lazy. His dissipation is in addition to his drive to create and learn, not in opposition.

His kidnapping, injury and escape change Tony more or less overnight. It's unclear at first just how or what he'd going to do with it, but the realization of what his weapons can do, what his company has made possible, and what his responsibility is hits him hard. It snaps him into an awareness of his place in the world, and the fact that he has, thus far, refused to take it. He's merely floated along with his father's legacy, not without contributing, but without contributing thoughtfully. Deciding that Stark Industries is no longer going to manufacture weapons is only part of his plan--while he does not wallow in guilt, he does for some reason feel an obligation to continue to "enforce" peace by using the Iron Man suit. Naturally, there is something in it for him as well. The lure is multi-faceted, which it has to be to hold his attention. Tony is not wholly selfish in his desire to be Iron Man, but neither are the auxiliary rewards nonexistent.

Because he is used to getting his own way, however, "doing what's right" is nearly always on his own terms. He's not introspective, and he's not really a political thinker. He believes that by putting down threats, and keeping his tech out of the hands of others, he can effectively keep the peace. He believes that sacrifices must sometimes be made, and that force is often necessary. He does not seem to be working towards a future where we do not want to kill each other. He seems, instead, to want to stay a step (or two) ahead of the competition. He also has enough ego to think that he can do it himself. Stark is not a team player. He is not invested in building a better future together. His future has his name on it in lights, and he does not seem to think that's a problem.

However, by the time of The Avengers he seems to have matured a little. For one thing, he seems to be in a committed relationship with Pepper Potts. Beyond that, something has changed to allow him to find a way of working with the team that comes together to fight Loki and the Chitauri. Despite their differences, when action is called for, not only does Tony contribute, but he takes orders and commits self-sacrifice with little promise of survival. Through his experiences as Iron Man, through his near-death, and through his more mature relationship with Pepper, he has found some stability. And when he is fulfilling a purpose he believes in, he is capable of getting along with others and not putting himself first.

This is not to say he's going to be humble about it. Tony is still likely to take point both because he is brave and strong and because it's flashy. But he is also much more likely to do what needs to be done even at a personal cost, and to respond to and care about others. He knows now that he wants to help people, and he has some idea about how to go about that. He knows that he can't necessarily do it all on his own, but he's not going to bow easily, either. He knows he's done some bad things and some good things, but he'll deflect both with humor and sarcasm.

On the outside, how Tony Stark comes across is going to vary widely. Like most public figures, he is controversial, and some laud him as a hero and a role model while others see him as a brash, irresponsible, spoiled brat. Tony's all right with this: he doesn't care what people think, but he very much wants people to care about him. Mercurial, his mood can shift quickly, and it's difficult to tell what he's thinking sometimes. Tony is not all surface and flash, but the surface and flash is an important part of him. Tony's a lot of things, some of them contradictory, but in the end he wants to do good and at heart he is a good person. His confidence and swagger are real, but also mask his own needs and insecurities from even himself.
Character's skills/abilities/powers: Tony, while human, is a genius in the engineering fields. Quick-thinking and skilled, he can invent and create technology even with limited resources. He is a fast learner. Whatever "powers" he has come from his Iron Man suit, which I presume will not be coming with him. He does, however, have an arc reactor in his chest powered by a "new" element.
Any special equipment your character is bringing along? This includes weaponry, magic items, etc.: He'll be coming with his arc reactor still intact, and will have been working on one gauntlet. So he will have elements of his tech but not the whole suit
Are you bringing your character to [community profile] ten_fwd from another game? If you are, which game?: N/A
If you answered yes above, briefly summarize how they were changed by and what challenges they faced in the climate of their previous game(s):
Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? The idea of Tony Stark in/around Starfleet fascinates me. For one thing, I feel like Jim Kirk is the lovechild of Tony and Steve. For another, what does a billionaire industrialist do in a land of no money? He's adaptable enough to make it, but irritating enough to create friction. I guess I plan on seeing what clash of values might occur, though of course Tony always means well... And yes, I did app before, and failed. I am hoping that my renewed interest in RP as well as the presence of an MCU cast will help!
